Senior Mechanical Engineer
Motorola Solutions unites people and technology so first responders can protect lives when seconds count. As Senior Mechanical Engineer you will own the rugged hardware that keeps radios, body-worn cameras and command-center systems working in fire, flood and combat. Your designs become the physical backbone of public safety around the world.
Performance Objectives
- Deliver production-ready mechanical designs for next-gen LMR and video devices that meet IP68, MIL-STD-810 and drop-test specs, cutting field failure rates 30 % within 18 months.
- Lead DFM/DFA reviews with contract manufacturers so first-article yield exceeds 95 % and unit cost drops 15 % versus current generation.
- Own thermal, structural and vibration analysis (FEA) that proves 10-year life in -30 °C to +70 °C environments before tooling release.
- Drive cross-functional design freeze on three major SKUs per year, hitting schedule gates with zero critical defects at EVT.
- Mentor two junior engineers and establish a reusable component library that shortens future programs by four weeks.
- Resolve top 10 field mechanical issues within 90 days of data receipt, restoring customer uptime above 99.5 %.
Environment & Resources
You report to the Director of Hardware Engineering inside a 40-person mechanical/electrical team in Chicago (hybrid). You have SolidWorks, ANSYS, 3-D printers, environmental chambers and a $2 M annual prototype budget. Global supply-chain and reliability labs sit one floor away.
Essential Qualifications
- 8+ years designing high-volume, environmentally sealed electronics (radios, cameras or similar) from concept through mass production.
- Proven FEA and physical-test correlation that has shipped products meeting MIL-STD or IP68.
- Hands-on DFM experience with injection molding, die-cast and sheet-metal at contract manufacturers in Asia.
- Ability to lead cross-functional reviews and close action items on schedule.
- BS Mechanical Engineering (MS preferred); PE a plus.
Role Selling Points
- Your parts protect 911 dispatchers, firefighters and police in 100+ countries.
- Public-company stability plus startup-speed programs on AI-enabled cameras and 5G radios.
- Direct line of sight from CAD to first responders who thank you by name.
- Competitive pay, RSUs and the chance to file patents that become industry standards.
